{"id":322,"date":"2022-07-03T18:42:30","date_gmt":"2022-07-03T18:42:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mileggedrobots.eecs.umich.edu\/?page_id=322"},"modified":"2022-07-06T18:02:57","modified_gmt":"2022-07-06T18:02:57","slug":"creating-a-bootable-xubuntu-flash-drive-using-a-chromebook","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/mileggedrobots.eecs.umich.edu\/index.php\/create-your-website-with-blocks\/software-install-config-xubuntu-pyckbot-mcc\/creating-a-bootable-xubuntu-flash-drive-using-a-chromebook\/","title":{"rendered":"Creating a bootable Xubuntu flash drive Using a Chromebook"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ChromeInstall\">Prepping the Flash Drive and Installing Xubuntu<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chromebooks are by far the sketchiest computers for this project. They do not lend themselves easily to booting into other OSes, and you&#8217;ll almost certainly need to do a full factory reset in the process. Also, because there are so many different Chromebook manufacturers and configurations, it&#8217;s hard to be certain that any single set of instruction will work consistently. You&#8217;ll likely need to do some improvisation and Googling to get it all sorted out.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you start <strong><em>make sure that you are using an Intel-based Chromebook <\/em><\/strong>and that you have <strong><em>three<\/em><\/strong> USB flash drives handy. One will become your Chromebook recovery device. The other two will be used to make your first <strong>bootable persistent Xubuntu USB flash drive<\/strong> (i.e., a version of Xubuntu that resides on its own USB flash drive, that you can boot from on most computers, and where you can save your work as you go). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As with <a href=\"https:\/\/mileggedrobots.eecs.umich.edu\/index.php\/create-your-website-with-blocks\/software-install-config-xubuntu-pyckbot-mcc\/prep-the-flash-drive-using-macos-10-14-and-later\/\">macOS<\/a>, this process cannot be done entirely in ChromeOS.  So we will break this into two procedures: First we create a bootable read-only Xubuntu USB flash drive. Then we use that drive to run Xubuntu on our Chromebook so we can create a second fully fledged readable\/writable &#8220;persistent&#8221; bootable USB flash drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, this is messy. But it (often) works. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PROCEDURE #1: Making a bootable USB drive on a Chromebook<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>First, save yourself a headache and label your USB flash drives.  Call one &#8220;<strong>Recovery<\/strong>,&#8221; another &#8220;<strong>USB A<\/strong>,&#8221; and the third &#8220;<strong>USB B<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/li><li>Install the Google&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/chromebook-recovery-utili\/jndclpdbaamdhonoechobihbbiimdgai\">Chromebook Recovery Utility<\/a><\/strong>, add it as a Chrome extension, and use it to create a recovery image: <ol><li>Launch the app, follow the pop-up instructions, plug in a your <strong>Recovery<\/strong> USB flash drive, and select that device as the location for your recovery image.  When the process finishes, remove your recovery device and set it aside.<\/li><\/ol><\/li><li>Now goto\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/xubuntu.org\/\">xubuntu.org<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0download the <strong><em>20.04 LTS<\/em> (\u201clong term support\u201d) release<\/strong>. (This version of Xubuntu is current and stable, and considered &#8220;enterprise grade&#8221;; it is scheduled to continue to enjoy full support and updates until 2025, and critical security updates until 2030.) You&#8217;ll want the file that ends in &#8220;<strong>.iso<\/strong>&#8220;; it&#8217;ll be 1 or 2 GB. <\/li><li>Once the image has finished downloading, rename it, replacing &#8220;<strong><em>.iso<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; at the end of the filename with &#8220;<strong><em>.bin<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;<\/li><li>Insert <strong>USB A<\/strong> (this is the one that will become your read-only bootable Xubuntu stick).<\/li><li>Launch <strong>Chromebook Recovery Utility<\/strong> again.<\/li><li>Click on &#8220;Settings&#8221; in the top right, chose &#8220;Use local image&#8221; and then select your &#8220;<strong><em>.bin<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; file from earlier (the name will be something like &#8220;<strong><em>xubuntu-20.04.2.0-desktop-amd64.bin<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;)<\/li><li>Once that process finishes, eject <strong>USB A<\/strong> and set it aside. It&#8217;s ready to go, but your Chromebook isn&#8217;t.<\/li><li><strong><em>Note<\/em><\/strong>: This part is the most confusing, as some steps may differ by Chromebook model. The gist of it is that we are going to enter &#8220;<strong>developer mode<\/strong>&#8221; (which usually means factory reseting the Chromebook), make some modifications to the Chromebook firmware. Once that&#8217;s complete you&#8217;ll  be able to boot from USB whenever we chose.<\/li><li>In order to modify your Chromebook firmware, start with entering &#8220;<strong>recovery mode<\/strong>&#8220;: <ol><li>Hold down the <kbd><strong>Esc<\/strong><\/kbd>, <strong><kbd>Refresh<\/kbd><\/strong>, (the curved circle-arrow key on the top row of keys), and the <strong><kbd>Power<\/kbd><\/strong> buttons all at once. Release them when the screen lights up.<\/li><\/ol><\/li><li>Ignore whatever is on the screen and instead hit <strong><kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd><\/strong> + <strong><kbd>D<\/kbd><\/strong>. <\/li><li>Hit <strong><kbd>Enter<\/kbd><\/strong>.  <strong><em>WARNING: This will wipe the Chromebook and factory reset it.<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>That is our goal.<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li>You are now officially in <strong>developer mode<\/strong> on a factory clean Chromebook! <\/li><li>Set up an account and log in, then bring up the <strong>Terminal<\/strong><ol><li>Different models use different key combos for this.  <strong><kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd><\/strong> + <strong><kbd>Alt<\/kbd><\/strong> + <strong><kbd>T<\/kbd><\/strong> and <strong><kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd><\/strong> + <strong><kbd>Alt<\/kbd><\/strong> + <strong><kbd>F2<\/kbd><\/strong> are common choices. You can Google what they are for your specific model.<\/li><\/ol><\/li><li>Now you&#8217;ll need to enter several commands into the Terminal in order to enable USB boot on your Chromebook. For many models, that means typing the following, hitting <kbd><strong>Enter<\/strong><\/kbd> after each: <ol><li>&#8220;<kbd>shell<\/kbd>&#8221; (on some models you use &#8220;<kbd>chronos<\/kbd>&#8221; instead) <\/li><li>&#8220;<kbd>sudo bash<\/kbd>&#8221; <\/li><li>&#8220;<kbd>crossystem dev_boot_usb=1 dev_boot_legacy=1<\/kbd>&#8221; <\/li><\/ol><\/li><li>You may also need to <a href=\"https:\/\/mrchromebox.tech\/#fwscript\">update LIOS<\/a> (depending on which Chromebook model you&#8217;re using). To do this, type the following commands into the Terminal (hitting <strong><kbd>Enter<\/kbd><\/strong> after each):<ol><li>&#8220;<kbd>cd; curl -LO mrchromebox.tech\/firmwareutil.sh<\/kbd>&#8220;<\/li><li>&#8220;<kbd>sudo install -Dt \/usr\/local\/bin -m 755 firmware-util.sh<\/kbd>&#8220;<\/li><li>&#8220;<kbd>sudo firmware-util.sh<\/kbd>&#8220;<\/li><li>Then follow the prompts and choose the option (1) to &#8220;<code>Modify my Chromebook\u2019s RW_legacy slot<\/code>&#8220;<\/li><\/ol><\/li><li>Now it&#8217;s time to try to boot from USB! Plug in <strong>USB A<\/strong> (your bootable read-only Xubuntu USB flash drive).<\/li><li>Reboot your Chromebook while holding down <strong><kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd><\/strong> + <strong><kbd>L<\/kbd><\/strong> <\/li><li>This will bring you to a new menu which will give you the option to boot from USB if you press <strong><kbd>Esc<\/kbd><\/strong><\/li><li>Select <strong>USB A<\/strong> and wait for it to load.<\/li><li><em>Success!<\/em> You are now booted into Xununtu (although you cannot save any changes you make or work you do).<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PROCEDURE #2: Making a bootable persistent Xubuntu USB drive on a Chromebook<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"block-733e9b0a-152a-452b-bbae-7a4b5e769c14\"><li>Next we&#8217;ll make a bootable Xubuntu flash drive where you <em>can<\/em> save your work, install applications, and so on, You should still be booted into Xubuntu.  Connect to the Internet.<\/li><li>Once again download the Xubuntu .iso by going to\u00a0<a style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, &quot;Segoe UI&quot;, Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, &quot;Helvetica Neue&quot;, sans-serif;\" href=\"http:\/\/xubuntu.org\/\">xubuntu.org<\/a><span style=\"color: initial; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, &quot;Segoe UI&quot;, Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, &quot;Helvetica Neue&quot;, sans-serif;\">\u00a0and\u00a0downloading the <\/span><strong style=\"color: initial; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, &quot;Segoe UI&quot;, Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, &quot;Helvetica Neue&quot;, sans-serif;\"><em>20.04 LTS<\/em> (\u201clong term support\u201d) release<\/strong><span style=\"color: initial; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, &quot;Segoe UI&quot;, Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, &quot;Helvetica Neue&quot;, sans-serif;\">. You\u2019ll want the file that ends in \u201c<\/span><strong style=\"color: initial; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, &quot;Segoe UI&quot;, Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, &quot;Helvetica Neue&quot;, sans-serif;\">.iso<\/strong><span style=\"color: initial; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, &quot;Segoe UI&quot;, Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, &quot;Helvetica Neue&quot;, sans-serif;\">\u201c; it\u2019ll be 1 or 2 GB. Save it to your Desktop so that it\u2019s easy to find later.<\/span><\/li><li>Now it&#8217;s time to install the software that will allow us to create a persistent flash drive.  Start by opening the <strong>Terminal Emulator<\/strong> (click on the mouse icon in the upper left corner and look under &#8220;Favorites&#8221;) and enter the following commends at the command line prompt (hit <kbd><strong>Enter<\/strong><\/kbd> after each, and wait for the command to run; it will return you to a prompt when it&#8217;s ready for a new command):<ol><li><code>sudo add-apt-repository universe<\/code> (will probably tell you \u2018universe\u2019 distribution component already enabled for all sources; that&#8217;s good!)<\/li><li><kbd>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mkusb\/unstable<\/kbd><\/li><li><kbd>sudo apt update<\/kbd><\/li><li><kbd>sudo apt install mkusb<\/kbd><\/li><li><kbd>sudo apt install usb-pack-efi\u00a0\u00a0<\/kbd><\/li><\/ol><\/li><li>Now click on the little mouse icon in the upper left and start typing \u201c<kbd>mkusb<\/kbd>\u201d in the Search box. A green icon with a stylized USB-pitchfork will pop up. It will be labelled \u201c<strong>mkusb<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0 Click it to launch.<\/li><li>The program will ask \u201c<code>Run mkusb versin dus?<\/code>\u201d click <strong>YES<\/strong><\/li><li>The program will warn you that the target device will be overwritten. That\u2019s the point, so click <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Chose \u201c<kbd><strong>i<\/strong><\/kbd>\u201d (for \u201c<strong><em>install (make a boot device)<\/em><\/strong>\u201d) and click <strong>OK<\/strong><\/li><li>Chose \u201c<strong><kbd>p<\/kbd><\/strong>\u201d (for &#8220;<strong><em>\u2018persistent live\u2019\u2014only Debian and Ubuntu<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;) and click <strong>OK<\/strong><\/li><li>Select your <strong><em>.iso <\/em><\/strong>(again)<\/li><li>Plug in <strong>USB B<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Select it in <strong>mkusb<\/strong> and click <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li><li>A new window will open labeled \u201c<em><strong>persistent live drive settings<\/strong><\/em>\u201d. Click <strong>Use defaults<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Another new window will open labeled  \u201c<em><strong>select space for persistence (percent)<\/strong><\/em>\u201d. click <strong>Use default<\/strong>.<\/li><li>One more new window will open labeled  \u201c<em><strong>select version of usb-pack<\/strong><\/em>\u201d. click <strong>Use default<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Next you&#8217;ll get the \u201c<em><strong>final checkpoint, go ahead?<\/strong><\/em>\u201d dialogue. Select the \u201c<strong>Go<\/strong>\u201d radio button and click <strong>Go<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Wait. A bunch of stuff will happen in the various open terminal windows. That&#8217;s good.<\/li><li>When all of the operations are complete you can click the <strong>OK<\/strong> button. <\/li><li>Shutdown the computer (click on the mouse icon in the upper left corner and then click the shutdown power button in the lower right corner of that menu.)<\/li><li>Done! Now test it out. To boot up your persistent Xubuntu flash drive:<ol><li>Unplug <strong>USB A<\/strong> and set it aside. Be sure to leave <strong>USB B<\/strong> plugged in.<\/li><li>Start your Chromebook while holding down <strong><kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd><\/strong> + <strong><kbd>L<\/kbd><\/strong> <\/li><li>This will bring you to a new menu which will give you the option to boot from USB if you press <strong><kbd>Esc<\/kbd><\/strong><\/li><li>Select your USB flash drive from the list.<\/li><li>The next menu is the &#8220;Grub&#8221; menu; it&#8217;s simple and text-based. Highlight the top option (it ends in &#8220;<strong>persistent live<\/strong>&#8221; and is probably already highlighted). Hit <kbd>Enter<\/kbd>. Xubuntu loads as before (likely skipping the big &#8220;Install\/Try Xubuntu&#8221; dialogue box).<\/li><li>Poke around for a bit and familiarize yourself with Xubuntu.  Change the desktop background image (there are several ways to do so; one is to right click anywhere on the desktop. Or you can click on that little mouse icon in the upper left and look for <strong>Settings<\/strong>). Once you&#8217;ve picked a new background image, shutdown the computer entirely.  Restart while holding down <strong><kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd><\/strong> + <strong><kbd>L<\/kbd><\/strong> and boot back into Xubuntu.  If all is working well, then you should still see the new background image you picked. <\/li><\/ol><\/li><li>You will no longer need <strong>USB A<\/strong> for anything, feel free to format it and clone <strong>USB B<\/strong> onto it, or use it for another project.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All done! You&#8217;re ready for the next step.
